This facility was designed for the testing and calibration of noninvasive acoustic flow meters using both Doppler shift and transit-time principles. Invasive meters such as turbines, venturi throat, electromagnetic probe, and Pitot type meters can be calibrated at the pipe flow test stand using custom modified pipes.
The pipe flow test stand has 4-,6-,8-,10-, and 12-in. pipe sizes in a variety of materials and wall thicknesses. The test stand was designed so that the pipe sections can be isolated individually. Tests can be conducted while meters are installed in the isolated lines.
Flow to the facility is provided by the laboratory's constant head tank. Flows are controlled using butterfly valves located at various locations in the stand. Water from the test stand returns to a sump in the laboratory floor where it can be pumped back to the constant head tank and reused. Flow rates are measured using a venturi tube located in the 12-in. supply line and a weir box equipped with a 90-degree V-notch weir. Maximum discharge is approximately 4500 gal/min.
