Tow Tank Facility

Picture of Tow Tank

This facility is primarily used for the calibration of mechanical current meters and large acoustic meters. Examples of meters calibrated in the towing tank are: mechanical rotating cup meters, both vertical and horizontal axis type meters; electromagnetic meters, one- and two-dimensional; acoustic time of travel meters; three-dimensional acoustic Doppler meters; and three-dimensional acoustic Doppler current profiling meters.

The towing tank has a 12 x 12 ft cross section and is 450 ft long. The tow vehicle is capable of speeds from 0 to 15 ft/s (feet per second), and has a platform size of 12 x 14 ft. The carriage is equipped with a data acquisition system designed to accept distance traveled, elapsed time, and meter pulse count information.
