Activation of Gaging Station

Staff from the USGS office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the HIF installed equipment and activated the gaging station near Slidell High School on August 4, 1997. Activation of this gaging station is part of the Partnership In Education Agreement between Slidell High School and the USGS.

Equipment installed in the gage house includes an EASI tipping-bucket rain gage, a Sutron 8210 Data Collection Platform (DCP), a Handar 555 DCP, a Hydrolab Minisonde 4 water quality monitor with Surveyor 4 display, and a Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) 600XL water quality monitor with YSI 610D display. The water quality monitors will measure the temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, pH, and depth of the water. The DCP's will collect data from the rain gage, the water quality monitors and the stage (depth) of the canal and transmit the data, by the GOES satellite, back to Slidell High. Within the next month, a weather station will be added to the gaging station. The weather station will measure wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, air temperature, and relative humidity.

The equipment has been configured to run independently. This will allow long term comparisons of similar instruments in actual field conditions. Slidell High students may be able to develop senior projects by comparing data collected by similar instruments. HIF engineers will be able to study equipment operation in field conditions over extended periods of time.
